To recognize outstanding initiatives and achievements, the 2009 Governor’s Technology Awards program includes eight awards categories, including three that recognize the unique business of governing localities, K-12 and Higher Education and two awards that honor telework initiatives. The categories are:

Award Categories

Online, Not in Line

Recognizes the innovative use of the Web and information technology to improve citizen access to and service from governmental entities of any type. Illustrate strategies used to improve citizens’ electronic interaction with government; promote availability, usability and/or transparency of information and increase public awareness and adoption of available services.

Cross-Boundary Collaboration

Recognizes the innovative use of information technology to provide government service based on the common needs of the user or economies in service delivery through shared processes. Entries should be submitted jointly by at least two government entities. Illustrate strategies to share data easily across boundaries; create knowledge-sharing cultures; promote IT solutions that support common business processes and promote innovative partnership programs.

IT as Efficiency Driver

Recognizes the innovative use of technology to promote efficiency in government. From mobile workforce tools to distance conferencing or education, intranet applications to public services, this category seeks the most innovative strategies to do more with less. Entries should clearly focus on the benefits received and efficiencies realized by the government entity through the launch of the nominated program, whether from a dollar return on investment, realignment of staff time, newly transparent processes/information or all three.

Innovative Use of Technology in Local Government

Recognizes the innovative use of technology to solve a business problem at the local level, where both budgets and staff are often small but the citizen or business needs are significant. Open to any local government entity, including social services and first responders as well as county, city and town governments. Entries should clearly identify the business problem, the IT solution and the benefits received through its implementation.

Innovative Use of Technology in K-12 Education

Recognizes the innovative use of technology to provide improved service delivery to Virginia’s schoolchildren. Open to local school systems and also to divisions within those school systems. Entries should clearly identify the business problem, the IT solution and the benefits received through its implementation.

Innovative Use of Technology in Higher Education

Recognizes the innovative use of technology to support the unique missions of Virginia’s colleges and universities. Cooperative projects between institutions and other governmental entities also fall into this category. Entries should clearly identify the business problem, the IT solution and the benefits received through its implementation.

Best Private Sector Telework Initiative

Awarded to the corporation (for profit or not-for-profit) that most clearly and effectively demonstrates the strategic use of telework to benefit its employees, the environment, the community and society and other stakeholders. Provide appropriate metrics.

Best Public Sector Telework Initiative

Awarded to the local, federal or state government entity that most clearly and effectively demonstrates the strategic use of telework to benefit its employees, the environment and other stakeholders. Provide appropriate metrics.
